As Obama said in his 2015 State of the Union address:
We are fifteen years into this new century. Fifteen years that dawned with terror touching our shores; that unfolded with a new generation fighting two long and costly wars; that saw a vicious recession spread across our nation and the world.
Whoa, sorry, too heavy.
Let’s just focus on the best 5 video ads we got to see in 2014. These ads are chosen by me, based on these factors: commercial success, memorableness, and a personal liking. They are in no particularly order.
Wren’s First Kiss
If you were to ask people what the more memorable video ads they saw was, chances are if anyone remembers anything, that First Kiss would rank among the top responses. So it turned out that it wasn’t as genuine as we thought it was (the people are actors!) and that it for a clothing boutique in LA, this video was — as one other blogger would say — a true pop-culture phenomenon.
Devil Baby Attack
We’ve talked about this video ad on here before but this ad is just fun. It’s silly, plays off the crowd, and has taken part in the uprising trend of ‘prank-vertisments’. Of it’s 50 million views, there were 30 million shares meaning that not only was this a success by itself, but it did what many videos try to do: become a social hit / viral success.
Thai Life Insurance: Unsung Hero
It sure feels like a long long time ago when this ad hit the online stream. Turns out, it was only 9 months ago. 2014 featured a lot of touching, story-telling, 3 minute+ ads. It was mushy gushy, successful and of them, the original Thai Life commercial was probably the best (aka, my favourite).
World’s Toughest Job – Being a Mom
Personally, this video ad didn’t do much for me. Maybe it was the questions about ethics surrounding a fake job interview. Or maybe it was spending too much time observing how people act during a supposedly job interview. Hell, are these people even real?
I sure don’t know but I can’t deny the popularity of this video. In fact, after watching several moms gush about this video and tear up a little, I guess it deserves a place on our top-5 list.
It’s a cute concept, for sure. A gotcha storyline with a happy ending.
The Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation
This video ad, winner of the Dutch commercial awards of 2014, is our sleeper pick of the year. A short 30 second video that packs the same velocity as the other 3+ minute ones. It’s a simple premise and one that makes us appreciate dogs a little more.
